Round 18 v Prahan: Lost by 33, Ressies: Won by 15

The Old Mentonians’ senior team could not finish the season with a win, being defeated by Prahran by thirty three points on Saturday.  Playing away in the last game of the year the Panthers faced a team that had to win if they were to have any chance of avoiding relegation.  Toorak Park has seen the demise of many Old Mentonians’ sides over the years and this was to be no exception.

The first ten minutes of the game saw six goals kicked with two to Chad Twentyman and one to Gareth Snow for the Panthers.  However, Prahran dominated the final stages of the quarter to lead by five goals at the break.  This pattern continued in the second term, with the home side more desperate and relentless with their running game.

Panthers’ coach, Peter Russo, shuffled his team around at half time and the visitors responded, outscoring Prahran in the second half.  Ben Lane, playing his first game for the year in the senior side, played well at centre half forward and in the ruck. 

Although winning more than their fair share of the ball, the Mentone side could not capitalise, and could not overcome the pressure exerted by the Prahran defence, which brought about many skill errors.

Fittingly, in his one hundred and fiftieth game for the Panthers, Anthony “Chicken” Palmer was his side’s best player.  His game on the bal was outstanding.  He was well supported by Michael Watts at centre half back, Trent Wiltshire and Richie Schloeffel, who both continued their recent good form, and first year player James Williams who worked hard all day on the wing.

While the senior team now looks to next year after finishing sixth, the year is far from over for the club, with both the Reserves’ and Under 19 teams finishing the home and away season in third position and both continue on to their respective first semi-finals.  Next week the Reserves travel to St Bernard’s ground in Essendon to take on Rupertswood, while the Under 19 play De La Salle at Scammell Reserve in Oakleigh.
