Round 17 v Yarra Valley: Lost by 23, Ressies: Won by 113

24th August 2006

The Old Mentonians could not continue their recent run of winning close games when they lost to Yarra Valley by 23 points at Keysborough on Saturday.  The visiting side had to win to ensure that they remained in contention for the finals, however the young Panthers’ team were not overawed by their higher ranked opponents.

The first quarter saw a very even game with the home side taking a one point lead at the break.  The second quarter was all Old Mentonians’, highlighted by a great snapped goal by Peter Monahan.  The Toners kicked six goals as they harassed Yarra valley and continually drove the ball forward.  Yarra Valley kicked two late goals to go into half time trailing by twenty six points.

Yarra Valley were a rejuvenated side after half time and kicked five goals quickly at the start of the second half.  It looked as if the home side may once again waste a good first half performance.  However a goal to Michael Basile reduced the margin to ten points at three quarter time.

The Panthers continued to play well and showed great resilience to fight back. Goals to Peter Flaskis, Tom Millis and a fourth by Basile regained the lead.  Yarra Valley refused to concede and again hit the front.  The mid field kept providing opportunities for the forward line, who were unable to capitalise.  It was only in the last three minute, when Yarra Valley kicked two goals that the score blew out.

Throughout the game Stewart Cleeve played well around the ground, after an injury to ruckman Matthew Elliot left the Panthers one player short after quarter time.  Justin Costello and Richie Schloeffel also played well and Trent Wiltshire stood out with a best on ground performance in the centre.  George Katris played well at full back and Blake Carroll played another solid game on the half back line.

Next week the seniors and reserves play at Prahran and for the senior team it will be the last game of the season.  The reserves, after a resounding win this week are ensured of a spot in the first semi-final.  The Under 19’s also had a strong win and next week have the bye, before also playing in the first semi-final.
