Round 16: UPDATE

15th August 2007

Round 16 saw the senior teams travel out to Yarra Valley , while the 19's played 4th placed Oakleigh at the Panther Pit. The reserves were keen to knock over Yarra Valley for one of the legends of the club, Matthew 'Aussie' Austin who on Saturday became only the 7th player to represent the Panthers on 250 occasions. In order to knock over Yarra, the reserves would have to get off to a good start unlike the previous few weeks. At half time the scores showed the Panthers up by 7 goals and clearly dominating the game. With Anthony 'Standing Room Only' Kiantos kicking another bag and Kym 'Plucka Duck' Regan playing his best game for the season, OMFC were able to steamroll Yarra in the second half. At the final siren the margin was a massive 86 points. The seniors were confident of a win but Yarra were fighting relegation and would be determined to knock off the top team so they can stay in D1 next season. The first half saw Yarra up by 2 goals and looking for an upset. The panthers, who were not playing the way which had got them to top spot, were then able to steady and get back the lead for the last change. Leading by a goal and with no score being added within 10 minutes of play, you would almost mark down another panther win. A team who is fighting relegation is one of the hardest teams to beat and this showed when Yarra slammed on 7 goals in 20 minutes to run out victorious by 39 points. Brent Fairbanks was again outstanding with his 8 majors while Justin Costello was able to provide run through the midfield. The 19's faced the daunting task of playing Oakleigh AFC who had previously beaten the panthers by over 100 points in there last encounter. With a few injuries and only 20 players able to play it wasn’t looking good. Going with the wind in the first quarter the panthers were able to open up a 3 goal lead going into quarter time. With another 2 players going down with injuries in that first quarter it was down to 18 men to fight out the last 3 quarters. Kicking with the wind in the 3rd quarter the young pups were able to open up a 4 goal lead going into the last quarter. With all the boys looking tired and exhausted Oakleigh were able to pile on 4 unanswered goals to get within a point of the panthers, but with a strong last effort led by Mitch Brown the panthers were able to kick another 2 goals to 1 and run out victors by 7 points. Jake Moon led by example all day while Alex Goodrich was unstoppable with his ability to weave in and out of traffic. UNLEASH
