Round 15 v Bulleen Temp: Won by 3, Ressies: Lost by 39

9th August 2006

A great performance by the Old Mentonians saw them defeat the second place Bulleen-Templestowe by three points in a very entertaining game at Keysborough last Saturday.  Scores were close all day, with two goals being the greatest margin at any stage of the day.

Captain Justin Costello led from the front in the first quarter as the Panthers took a one goal lead into the first break.  Through out the day he was ably assisted in the mid-field by Richie Schloeffel and Peter Flaskis who used his strength to great advantage.  Stuart Cleeve was dominant in the ruck and Matthew Elliott was dominant with his marking around the ground.  As they have all year, Blake Carroll and Anthony Palmer were outstanding across half back and Danny Carroll played his best game since returning from overseas.

The ball was continually pushed forward and Brent Fairbanks, relishing his return to the forward line, dominated, kicking six goals.

At three quarter time the Panthers found themselves with a three goal lead, and the question was: could they defend this lead against a top side.  The answer came with the great pressure and resilience which the young Panthers showed.  Not for the first time this year, the Old Mentonians found themselves with a depleted side, as Mathew Stroud suffered an injury, leaving the home side with only three interchange platers available.  However the defence resisted the Bullen charge, and despite being outscored, the Panthers held on to record their best win for the season.

Next week the team travels to play Banyule, who’s senior team is fighting to avoid relegation and the Panthers’ reserves need to win to ensure a place in the finals.  The Under 19’s, already assured of playing in the finals after this week’s twenty goal win, play at Monash University.
