Round 13 v Rupertswood: Lost by 28, Ressies: Won by 70

For the second week in a row the Old Mentonians could not help one of their team mates celebrate a significant milestone with a win.  Stalwart defender George Katris, played his 200th game for the club against Rupertswood on Saturday, but the Panthers were defeated by 28 points in a very entertaining game at Keysborough.

The home side started well, kicking three of the first four goals of the game, but the fourth placed Rupertswood rallied to lead by six points at quarter time.  The visitors continued with their good play in the second quarter, while the home side could not find a target and were playing undisciplined football.  This allowed the Sunbury team to take a 27 point lead at half time.

The Panthers started the second half as a revitalised team.  Despite being reduced to twenty fit players, with injuries to key players Gareth Snow and Rowan Ball, the game was taken right up to the visitors.  Mathew Austin continued his good form in the ruck and Blake Carroll was outstanding on the half back line.  Coach Peter Russo moved Justin Vick from the back pocket to the forward line and Vick accepted the challenge, kicking five goals for the quarter.  Michael Basile and Chad Twentyman also provided targets in attack as the Panthers kicked eight of the thirteen goals kicked in the third quarter, and at three quarter time Rupertswood led by nine points.

The Toners were not to get any closer as Rupertswood kicked four goals to one in the last quarter to run out comfortable winners.  Other good players for the Old Mentonians were onballers Richie Schloeffel, Trent Wiltshire and Justin Costello.

Both the Reserves and Under 19 teams had very good wins, consolidating their places in the top four of their respective competitions.  The club now plays finals contenders Old Geelong at Como park while the Under 19’s will be looking to continue their great form playing the top side, Old Haileybury away.
