PANTHERS RUN OVER PIRATES IN A TIGHT ONE
Another great day for football as we headed down the highway to The Peninsula School to take on the 3-8 Peninsula Pirates who in 8th position on the ladder are in the relegation mix. We went into the game with Eaton, Graham and Follett out injured and Chicken pulling out on the morning of the game. Messina, Moon and Louie Mitchell coming in along with Big Banksy for his first game of the year.
The first quarter started off with Big Banksy working well with Cochrane in the forward line both taking strong contested marks to snag the first 3 goals of the match. Emmo was into everything and Ballsy and Squeaker McCloskey were rebounding well off half back. Tonners by 7 pts at the first break.
The stage looked set for a big day but like the SM game, we stopped and the Pirates bounced right back into contention to nail 4 of the next 5 goals. Norts was probably our only standout in the second quarter as he marked and goaled to stop the rot. A great tackle from Cocky saw him snag one from a tight angle in the pocket before a peninsula defender did his best “Gubby Allen” and passed it direct to Banksy in the goal square for another. It wasn’t pretty but we were up by 7 pts at the main break.
The third quarter was a mirror of the second quarter as the pirates played their ground better. Thomo was doing his job on Rombotis and Billy Carroll, Cossie and Laner in the ruck were doing their part. Peninsula added 3 goals to take the lead whilst we kept peppering the points before Chaddy slotted our only major for the qtr from 25m out. Pirates by 7pts at the orange break.
A big last quarter was required and quite a few stepped up to the plate. Speersy chimed in with a crumbing and a snap goal. Fielder was doing his trademark runs and Cocky, Ballsy and Billy were great contributors but it was Banksy with his 3 in the last qtr from big strong contested marks that broke the game open as we got home by 3 goals.
Big test this week as Bulleen / Templestowe make the long trek down Springvale Rd as we host the 10-2 second placed Bullants in a must win for us to secure our spot in the 4. Round 13 has massive ramifications for the makeup of final 4 as the top 6 teams in contention play each other this weekend. Other matches being Old Geelong @ NOB’s and Fitzroy Reds @ South Melb Districts.

RESERVES CONSOLIDATE SPOT IN THE FINAL FOUR WITH HUGE WIN OVER PENINSULA
The trip down the freeway to Mt Eliza is always a nervous one, as Peninsula are never easy to beat at home. Added to this the fact that there was only a 4 point margin when the teams met earlier in the season, this was obviously a danger game.
The early part of the first quarter saw both teams throwing everything at the contest, and creating numerous opportunities up forward. However with superior accuracy in front of goal, the Panthers managed to cement a handy lead at quarter time. Tony Bournon was in his ”usual” form, kicking goals early, whilst Michael Lawes, Dave Alexander and Mat Elliot set the scene for the remainder of the game in the backline.
With the aid of a slight breeze in the 2nd quarter, we were able to pretty easily get on top of the opposition, with attack after attack coming from the stoppages. Jesse Prowse led the way, whilst Bernie Coghlan’s run through the corridor kept the ball moving quickly, setting up our forwards with quick delivery. By the main break we led by 33 points, and the game looked as though it may well break wide open.
The second half saw the fitness of the Panthers begin to really highlight the difference between the teams. 8 goals to three for the half ensured that not only did we remain in the four, but we added some valuable percentage running out 71 point victors. Contributions from the entire team ensured that selection will again be tough, a great position for our team to be in at this stage of the season.
Next week is without doubt the biggest game of the season against Bulleen Templestowe. A win will ensure a good break on 5th spot, and set up the run to the finals with our destiny in our own hands.

UNDER 19’S
The Under 19’s let themselves down with a poor second half against ladder leaders Old Melburnians at the Junction Oval. We started well, trailing by 17 points after Old Melburnians had the use of a strong wind during the first quarter. Our pressure was good, and we had quite a few chances to score, with Jarrod Lumsden and Matt Christopoulos both scoring well. In the back line Daniel Hull was dominant and he was supported well by Sam Kent and Daniel Alexander who again showed great courage in the way the he attacked the footy.
The second quarter saw us start well early, but we didn’t make the most of our opportunities. Our only goal for the quarter came from a great “rovers” goal from Dave Bardoel, who took the ball as it spilled from a pack and snapped truly from the forward pocket. While we squandered our chances, Old Melburnians made the most of theirs and kicked four goals against the wind.
The second half was all Old Melburnians and we were only able to kick three points in each of the last two quarters. Players such as Cam Labrooy, Mike Myers-Snyders and James Fisher battled hard but we were out numbered by bigger, stronger side. The stand out player for the Panthers was Dave Bardoel, who took numerous marks around the ground in what was a best on ground performance.
Clearly we will have to regroup if we are to put up a better performance when we host Beaumaris at Keysborough on Saturday.
