Round 11 v Therry Penola: Won by 18, Ressies: Lost by 19

The Old Mentonians turned a thirty point deficit into an outstanding three goal win against Therry at Keysborough on Saturday.  Given that that both clubs have had similar seasons it promised to be a close game and this proved to be true.  The Panthers’ horrid run with injury and player unavailability continued and the club was forced to make seven changes to the side which drew at St Leos last week.

After an even first quarter, Therry played the better football in the second. Kicking six goals to the home side’s one.  However the panthers rallied and totally dominated the second half, restricting the visitors to a goal in each of the last two quarters while kicking eleven for the half.

The Panthers’ two pronged attack of Michael Basile and Chad Twentyman kicked ten goals between them and the dominance of Matthew Austin, Peter Flaskis and Richard Schloeffel on the ball ensured that the forwards were provided with plenty of opportunities.

Despite the dominance of the Old Mentonians’ in he second half, when Therry kicked a goal to level the scores with ten minutes to play, it seemed that the Panthers may have been playing in drawn games in consecutive weeks.  However, the determination and desperation of the young Panthers was outstanding, with Blake Carroll and Gareth Snow in particular ensuring that Therry would return home, disappointed.

Next week the senior and reserves’ teams travel to Bulleen to take on ladder leaders Old Carey while the Under 19’s play at De La Salle , with the winner taking third spot on the ladder.
