Round 10 v St Leos: Draw, Res: Won by 80

The Old Mentonians let a great opportunity slip when they drew with St Leos on Saturday.  On a blustery day, the Panthers kicked with the wind in the first quarter, and made the most of the conditions, kicking eight goals.  David Cochrane started well, kicking three goals, and Anjthony Palmer and Blake Carroll continued their good form across the half back line.

The situation was reversed in the second quarter, with St Leos fighting back and restricting the visiting side to just four points. The third quarter was an even affair, with Michael Basile starting to exert his influence on the game and Trent Wiltshire and Justin Costello performing well around the ground. At three quarter time the Panthers had slightly extending their lead and began the last term twenty five points to the good.

St Leos stormed forward continually at the beginning of the final quarter to kick six goals to go to a twelve point lead with less than half the quarter played..  Then, the  Toners rallied, with Basile taking some inspirational marks and kicking three goals to give the Panthers a lead of six points with ten minutes left to play.  The final stages of the game saw some great defensive play and the desperation of both sides was outstanding.  Just as it seemed that the Old Mentonians would steal a win, a quick kick out of the pack found an unmarked St Leos’ player who, with six seconds remaining in the game, kicked a goal to level the scores.

The Panthers need to now ensure that they defeat Therry this week at Keysborough to keep any hopes of playing in the finals alive.  The Reserves had another strong win, defeating St Leos by fifteen goals, and have  a good chance to secure second spot on the ladder before the end of the season.  The Under 19’s had the bye.
