SENIORS STRONG AGAINST OLD GEELONG
Spirit and belief go a long way to getting you over the line in some games, and the Panthers showed plenty of both on Saturday.
Starting the game with the mercury in the single digits it was Old Geelong who were the first to settle and master the wet and slippery conditions. The Oggers looked the goods in the opening term and headed into the first break nearly 4 goals up – in the wet this was a far bigger lead than the score board suggested.
The Panthers settled after quarter time and found a little more intensity. Brad Norton once again tore it apart in the middle of the ground and David Emerson stood up to be counted in one of his best games this year. Daryl Stephens gave his all in the middle, making the most of his opportunity and in the process making sure the Panthers were on the bottom of the pack more often than not. The combined efforts of the boys along with David Cochrane’s great goal kicking saw the Panthers pile on 4 goals 5 to a solitary point in the second quarter and go into the main break in front by one straight kick.
An arm wrestle of a third quarter, which lasted a full 36 minutes, saw Old Geelong only claw back the gap by a point, helped by a last second goal before the three quarter siren.
The build up for the final quarter couldn’t have been better, the Panthers beginning the term with a narrow 5 point lead. Old Geelong started well and took a one point lead early in the quarter. Not hitting the panic button just yet the boys stood their ground and kept right at it. Defending the Panther Pit was a big theme before the game, and the boys weren’t going to slow down now.
A defining moment late in the game was the super courageous mark by co-captain Justin Costello. Running with the flight deep into defense, Cossie never took his eyes from the ball and earned himself a ripper headache in the process after being flattened by the Old Geelong full forward. SPIRIT.
Then enter David Teasedale. BELIEF. A long centering kick from Anthony ‘Chicken’ Palmer to the top of the square looked certain to be punched away by one of many defenders, however Teasa had other ideas. Floating back in the pack the big fella took a terrific chest mark and then went back and drilled the 6 pointer from straight in front. A seven point lead to the Panthers, game over. John Thomson ensured the game was ours when he marked from 40 out and slotted home another point to put us 8 points up in the final seconds. The Panthers victorious in a terrific match, a season defining win and one which has kept us firmly in the top four.

RESERVES: Panthers Fall Well Short of Strong Old Geelong Outfit
It was a wet and windy day at Keysborough last Saturday, and it was clear from the conditions that it was going to be a tough day for both teams.
Having arrested the trend of slow starts the previous week, we were keen to again be hard at the ball in the first quarter. Although Bernie Coughlan showed some great poise to kick the 1st goal of the match, it was soon clear that our intensity was not at the level required. This was disappointing, as our tackling and 2nd efforts were such a key part of the previous week’s great victory. By quarter time we had fallen more than 2 goals behind
Old Geelong failed to capitalize kicking with the breeze in the 2nd term, but were still able to extend the lead to take a 26 points lead into the main break.
After half time it was all one way traffic, and in the end Old Geelong ran out 76 point winners.
It was a game that the Panthers will need to quickly forget, and focus on the huge challenge this week against Fitzroy Reds at Peterson reserve North Fitzroy.

UNDER 19’s
The Under 19’ s battled hard in very ordinary conditions against Beaumaris at Keysborough on Saturday. The first quarter saw the young Panthers match it with their opponents and the forwards were given many opportunities. However, inaccurate kicking cost us dearly in the first quarter. One goal six at quarter time left us equal with Beaumaris who then managed to pull away from us.
Kyle Goulding continued his great form in the ruck and his efforts gave both Matt Christopoulos and Mike Myers-Snyders plenty of chances to drive the ball forward. David Bardoel used his strength to advantage in the forward line and the inclusion of Brett Felsenthal, returning from the senior team, provided increased skill around the packs and across half forward. Captain, James Fisher, also continued his good form, playing well at full back.
Beaumaris gradually moved ahead of us, but it was only a few late goals when the game was virtually over that extended the final margin. This week we play at home against Old Melburnians at 2.00 p.m.
