ROUND 3 UPDATE

1st May 2008

SENIORS

With both senior teams undefeated after two rounds, the round 3 clash out at Brunswick was always going to be a spirited event. Kicking with a pretty stiff breeze the Panthers weren't able to get off to the start we hoped for. With the conditions making accurate kicking for goal a challenge, both sides sprayed a few wide and the Panthers went into the first break down by just one point. NOBS made better use of the breeze and their large ground in the second to kick away slightly and take a 13 point lead into half time.
After the main break the Panthers lifted their intensity, however NOBS responded and kicked away against the breeze and extend their half time lead by a further 2 points. With the game getting quite heated at times, the Panthers started the last quarter against the breeze and faced a pretty tough final quarter. Showing terrific spirit, the boys lifted in every aspect, and crept slightly in front of NOBS half way though the last. The continued hard efforts of Ricky Ironmonger and Danny Carroll a particular highlight which lifted their team mates. Unfortunately we weren't able to keep it up for the full quarter, with NOBS kicking the last four goals of the game to run away with a 22 point lead and the four points.

Further last weeks report - Kyle 'the kid' Tickell wants to challenge the official stats man, claiming his fourth goal against Yarra was never credited to him....sorry Kid, can't help you - you're stuck with three!

RESSIES
The ressies game was a tough fought battle with the boys eventually going down by 4 goals. Despite laying down the challenge, the Panthers ran out of legs in the last quarter, allowing NOBS to run over the top in the end. Dale Messina showed plenty throughout the day and is knocking loudly at regaining his senior spot. First gamer Timmy Rooke was also impressive, turning on the after burners a few times throughout the match.

U/19s

The Panthers’ Under 19 side recorded their first win of the season with a resounding 113 point win over Oakleigh at Keysborough on Saturday.

Oakleigh got away to an early lead after a rather physical start to the game, which saw Kiefer Smith-Cameron and Tom Garside unable to play beyond the first quarter. Oakleigh held an eight point lead at quarter time, but that lead would not last long.

The Old Mentonians produced a 9 goal second quarter (with Mitch Brown contributing 5 on his own). This high scoring came about because of strong play and good team work all over the ground. The Panthers outscored their opponents by 20 goals after quarter time.

Daniel Hull led the back line well from full back and he was well supported by Jarrod Lumsden’s long kicking from half back and Jordan Lee also playing strongly.

Kyle Goulding again played well in the ruck, winning the knock out regularly and giving Jamie Brohier and Matt Christopoulos plenty of the ball. Once the ball went forward, Brown, who finished with 9 goals and Mark Gledhill, who kicked 6 for the day, were dominant.

Overall this was a game which showed three important things about our Under 19’s. Firstly, they will not be intimidated by opposition players, secondly we have some fine young players representing our Club, and thirdly this is a group which plays well as a team, and on Saturday every player made a contribution to a very good win.
