Seniors Lead All Day Against Yarra
After returning to the winners list with our first ever win at Toorak Park last weekend against Prahran, it was back home this week to take on the winless Yarra Valley. Yarra have always played hard competitive footy against us with many close games over the years and this was again the case.
A couple of changes this week saw Shane Alexander in for his first game. Laner back in the ruck and Scotty Fairbanks and Biggsy in for their first game after a game in the Ressies last week. And in a very late change we also lost Mitchell prior to the game, replaced by Shagger, back from o/s.
The first qu art er was a hard slog as there was a fair amount of rain beforehand during the Ressies game. Across half back, Messina and McCloskey were doing a fine job as too was Fielder. Norts again around the packs was into everything. Only a goal each was scored in the first qu art er with Ricky Ironmonger slotting through a clever right foot banana kick from the point post. Tonners by a point at quarter time.
The second quarter saw Cochrane slot through one off the ground in the goal square followed shortly after with his second from 15 metres out. He then swapped with Chicken at CHB as he slotted through a great goal on the run. Yarra added 4 of their own before Ricky kicked one after laying a great tackle and 25 metre penalty. Chris Graham, getting better with every game, goaled after a contested mark and Norts snagged another after a snap from the pocket. Thompson was doing a good job on Keem and Yarra were only trailing by 2 majors at the main break.
For the 3rd qtr, we had Chicken doing well around the ground and Norts again leading from the front and nailing one after a strong contested mark. Ballsy across half back was doing well and aided by a 50 metre penalty made no mistake. Speersy, Cossie, Biggsy and Kiantos were strong contributors all day. Finally Jake Moon snapped a great running goal after a fantastic individual effort from Billy Carroll to shepherd the oncoming Yarra player to stretch our 3 qtr time lead to 3 sausage rolls.
In the last qu art er after a strong day in the ruck, Laner goaled on the run and our final 2 were added by Darryl Stevens (tackle and 25m) and Shane Alexander (mark) to close out a hard fought 5 goal win. Next week, a big test as we tackle the undefeated NOB’s at home.

Reserves Trounce Yarra Valley In The Wet
After the disappointment of last week, it was a very determined Panther outfit that took the field against Yarra Valley. There had been plenty of rain before the game ensuring an old style battle of tough footy was ahead for both teams.
The Panthers had the added incentive of winning for Club legend Tony Bournon who was playing his 350th game for the club. A hard fought first quarter saw both teams struggle to make effective use of the football, however there was no questioning the effort coming from the Panther boys. Strong tackling, hard running, and general pressure around the contest created numerous opportunities up forward, but we were wasteful in front of goal, and failed to create much of a lead by the first break. Although we didn’t make the most of the chances, the defence, lead strongly by the ever reliable Dave Alexander, was fantastic and only allowed the Yarra boys to kick one goal.
The game opened up in the second quarter, and we managed to extend the lead to 24 points by the main break. We continued to put pressure on the Yarra boys, with the team’s tackling the highlight of the term. Michael Lawes showed the way, laying at least 5 tackles for the quarter and the rest of the team followed, whilst Russ Goulding created drive out of the middle.
The rain continued to come down, and the ball began to resemble a piece of soap in the third term. New team member Steve Campbell did not seem to notice the conditions and took a few strong marks, creating numerous chances for the forwards, whilst both Chris Sinclair and Dave Forsythe continued on from their good first half efforts. All 3 had their best games for the season.
There were plenty of tired bodies heading into the last term, and this showed on the scoreboard with one solitary goal to the Panthers (with none conceded) being the total return for 25 minutes slogging it out. Overall it was a good win, and a fitting way to celebrate this milestone game. Tony ended the game with 4 goals taking his season total to 41.

Under 19s
The Under 19’s travelled to Ormond on Saturday to take on a team that had given us a resounding defeat in the first meeting between the two teams this year. The young Panthers acquitted themselves well and it was really only a lapse of about fifteen minutes in the second quarter which cost us and provided the blow out in the scores.
Two more new players joined us on Saturday, Beau Appleby and Adam Ong and we welcomed Mathew Campbell back from the seniors for his first Under 19 game for the year.
Jamie asked our players to harass and put pressure on the Ormond side, and we responded well. Many of the points that the opposition kicked should have been goals but for the pressure put on by our players.
Scott Royston continued the good form which he showed in his first game and he provided Matt Christopoulos and James Fisher with plenty of the ball. James, relished his move from defence to the mid-field and was the Panthers’ best player on the day. Others to play well were Daniel Hull, who was outstanding on the back line, lee and Daniel Alexander. Cam Labrooy was again classy and elusive on te forward line and showed that he is a player with a great deal of promise for the future.
Next week we play Collegians at home and this promises to be a game that should be fairly close as we were only narrowly defeated by tehm in round one.
