Seniors

Taking on Prahran at the Keysborough Playing Fields, the Old Mentonians again didn’t play their best football and went down in a tight encounter. The loss drops the Panthers out of the top 4 to fifth spot on the ladder.

The Old Mentonians had the first use of a handy breeze and despite good endeavour from the home side, skill errors cost the Panthers against a determined Prahran side. Prahran made the most of their opportunities against the breeze with three straight goals to go to quarter time four points up.

The Old Mentonians played better football in the second quarter although the game was still generally scrappy. The Panthers started the quarter with a couple of behinds before the midfielders got on top to win the centre clearances and give more supply to the forwards. The Old Mentonians managed to kick four goals in reasonable quick time in the middle stages of the quarter, including two from free kicks. Despite Prahran kicking the final goal of the quarter, the Panthers had controlled the quarter to go to the main break with a 17-point lead.

The two sides traded goals during the third quarter. Chris Graham kicked the first goal of the quarter for the Panthers but a free kick to Prahran gave the visitors the reply. This trend continued for most of the quarter but the Old Mentonians also missed some kickable goals that could have pushed the margin out further. Prahran kicked a goal after the siren to trail by only nine points at the last break.

Prahran started better in the final quarter but opened with a couple of behinds. A goal to Prahran tied the scores and a behind put them in the lead, but the Old Mentonians managed to regain the lead through a goal to Anthony Palmer. This was to be the Panthers only goal for the quarter though. A couple of points to Prahran brought the margin to three points but a late goal gave the visitors the lead. The Old Mentonians attacked desperately in the final minutes but could not clinch victory.

Next week the Old Mentonians must get back on the winners list when they take on Fitzroy at the Keysborough Playing Fields.

Reserves

With a full complement of 22 players in the team and being back at home, the Old Mentonians were looking forward to taking on bottom side Prahran. Commitment for a sustained four quarter effort was called for prior to the game and that was what was delivered.

The Panthers started well in the first half, kicking five goals to one in each of the first two quarters. At other times this season we have dropped off a bit after leading well at half time but that was not the case this week. Eight goals were piled on in the third quarter as the lead was extended beyond 90 points.

Prahran kicked a couple of consolation goals in the final quarter but the Panthers managed to get the final margin beyond 100. We have a big task against Fitzroy this week, where a win would put us back in the top 4.
