FINAL 2 Ressies Prelim v Old Carey: Won by 49
10th September 2006

The Old Mentonians Football Club theme song was heard long and loud last weekend as two Panthers’ teams won their respective Preliminary Finals and earned a place in this weeks Grand Finals.
On Saturday, the Reserves gained a spot in their third succesive grand final. They soundly defeated Old Carey by 49 points at Preston. Carey had twice defeated the Panthers throughout the season.
Old Carey kicked with the aid of a six goal wind in the first quarter, but they could not make the most of their luck in winning the toss. The Old Mentonians’ defence, led by Michael Lawes at centre half back, was outstanding, restricting Carey to three goals, and a late goal to Ryan Alexander capped of a great first quarter for the Panthers.
In the second quarter the Old Mentonians showed their opponents how to play with the wind. Ben Lane at centre half forward was dominant, and players such as Tom Millis, Peter Flaskis and Ricky Ironmonger continually drove the ball forward. Once the ball was deep in the forward line, Carey had no answer to another superb display from Tony Bournon, who finished the day with seven goals. Mentone kicked seven goals to two in the second quarter to take a seventeen point lead to half time.
The second half was a replica of the first, with Menton’s great defence restricting Old Carey when they had use of the wind, and then the forward line making great use of the wind in the final quarter. Lane and Bournon continued their domination and they were ably assisted by Matthew Elliott and Chris Dwyer on the ball. Dwyer will play his 250th game for the club in this week’s grand final.
Both games are at the same times and venues this week. The Under 19’s meet Mazenod at Elsternwick Park at 7.00 p.m. on Friday, while the Reserves take on Old Geelong at Preston at 11.20 a.m. on Saturday.
